Raw Mango (Kairi) Dal (Sweet & Sour Lentils)




Hello Everyone...


Dal Chawal (Lentils and Rice), a most loved comfort food for most of the Indians and I promise I am again no different. We Indians as much love our plain dal, we have infinitely different ways to make it more flavorful and delicious, love that equally. Every family has their own family recipe to cook all lentils and we keep trying all other variety of recipes to give these lentils lovely twists and it includes cooking them with seasonal produce too.

Raw Mango dal is one such finger licking delicious recipe which I am going to share with you all today in this space.



Ingredients :

To cook Basic dal :

Masoor Dal (Red Lentils) 1 cup

Turmeric Powder 1/2 tsp

A pinch of hing

1 tsp of Oil


Other Ingredients:

  • Raw Mango (Kairi) 1

  • Mustard Seeds 1 tsp

  • Jaggery 2 tsp

  • Green Chilis 2

  • Salt to tasste

  • Oil to cook

  • For tadka Cumin Seeds 1 tsp Whole Dry Red Chilis 1 Red Chili Powder 1 tsp



Lets get Cooking:

  1. Wash Dal 3-4 times and soak it in 2 cups clean water for 20 minutes.

  2. Pressure cook soaked dal by adding Turmeric Powder, Hing and Oil as mentioned in list above for about 3-4 whistles. Let the cooker cool down and whisk cooked dal for smooth consistency.

  3. While Dal is getting soaked and cooked, peel and slice the Raw Mango.

  4. Take a Pan and add a tbsp of cooking oil in it. Once oil is hot add Mustard Seeds to it and let them splutter.

  5. Add Chopped Green Chilis along with peeled and sliced Raw Mango. Add Jaggery too. Mix and cook till Raw mango slices are soft. Add half a cup of water which will help raw mangoes to get cooked nicely.

  6. Once raw mango get cooked completely, its time to pour in cooked and whisked dal in the pan.

  7. Give everything a nice stir. Add some water to adjust the consistency. Add Salt to taste. Mix well and give the mixture a good boil which help all flavors to come together.

  8. After that great boil of couple of minutes its time to Switch off the flame and remove this Dal in serving bowl.

  9. Lets quickly make 2nd Tadka (Tampering). For that heat some oil in Tadka pan and 1 tsp of Cumin seeds. Once they start spluttering quickly add Dry red chili and Red chili powder. Immediately Switch off the flame and pour this tadka (Tampering) all over that lovely Raw mango dal sitting in serving bowl. Our Kairi Dal (Raw Mango Lentils) is ready to get served.

How can we Serve it:

  • Serve it with Plain Rice or Jeera Rice. Taste the best that way.

  • We can even serve it with Whole Wheat Chapati (Indian Flat bread)


Tips:

  • You can use leftover plain dal if you have any.

  • Toor dal (Pigeon Peas) also work the best for this recipe. Just replace Masoor Dal with Toor Dal with every step of recipe remaining same including soaking and cooking of dal.

  • You can even cube the Raw mango after peeling. This is completely your choice.
